I am going to share my own story about a Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) I set for myself over 8 years ago. I was at a place where i felt I needed to create a new challenge in my life. I felt that my purpose in life was shifting. Have you ever felt that pull? That need to make a change, but yet unsure of what that is or even how to go about it?
I began working with a coaching team and that is when the light bulb went off. I wanted to explore a new avenue of helping others. I had worked for over 28 years in one profession I felt I needed to create a new path for myself so I enrolled in my first coaching course Foundations for Coaching. I wasn't sure what that meant for me at the time. I struggled with creating a niche. I didn't know who my target audience was. Yet I continued to take courses. I created my first website, I published it and I waited with baited breath for my first client. When I began as a coach I didn't have an end plan. I just knew it was what I wanted to do eventually. I didn't plan it out, I wasn't SMART about it. that is why Goal Setting and creating mastermind/group coaching is my passion. I want to work with others to create their own BHAG and to have support as they begin to create their S.M.A.R.T goals to reach that BHAG. What is SMART? It is a method of creating a goal in such a way that you can obtain it by taking steps each day towards that end goal. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Action oriented, Realistic, Time Sensitive. Let's look at a goal that someone recently brought up in one of my workshops. They wanted to create a workshop/webinar to present to their client base. Questions I asked to help them get SMART about this goal: When would you like to have the webinar? Do you have the materials needed for the event? What format are you using? How are you getting registrations? This wasn't to overwhelm them it was to help them focus on the steps and actions they needed to take. Let's say you are offering a workshop in three weeks you should then back track from the drop dead date to what you need to do in two weeks, one week down to what can/do I need to do today? By taking an action step each day towards your end goal you are no longer overwhelmed and can actually see results. One important step a lot of us forget to do is build in the celebrations or rewards for getting to our goal. Make sure to build those in along the way to encourage your self on your accomplishments!
